About HSUHK FinTech Literacy Enhancement Project

Overview

Launched in 2022, the HSUHK FinTech Literacy Enhancement Project transforms financial technology education at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, aligning with Hong Kong’s role as a global financial hub. Funded by ~HK$19 million from the Hong Kong Education Bureau’s Enhancement and Start-up Grant Scheme (ESGS), the project addresses the region’s FinTech talent gap, projected to require 3,000 professionals annually by 2027. By prioritizing accessible, non-technical education, we empower diverse students with practical skills in AI, blockchain, and regulatory technology (RegTech), preparing them for Hong Kong’s dynamic fintech ecosystem.

Funding and Investments

The ESGS funding of ~HK$19 million has been pivotal in building a robust FinTech education ecosystem. Key investments include:

  • Hardware:

    • High-End PCs: Equipped our FinTech labs to support hands-on learning for students across programs.

    • High-End Server and Supercomputer: Enhanced computational capabilities for AI and blockchain simulations, costing ~HK$2 million

  • Software:

    • Acquired advanced FinTech and AI teaching software, including no-code platforms and cloud-based tools enabling accessible learning without coding expertise.

  • Human Resources:

    • Hired experienced FinTech experts to develop curricula, teach courses, and mentor students, ensuring industry-aligned education.

  • Program Development:

    • Revamped the BBA (Hons) in Financial Analysis into BBA (Hons) in Financial Analysis and FinTech, doubling enrollment from 40 to 80 students.

    • Launched a FinTech minor, open to all HSUHK majors, fostering interdisciplinary skills.

    • Introduced courses like Cloud Training and AI Essentials, certifying students in AI and cloud skills.

    • Planned a Master’s program in FinTech to further elevate HSUHK’s leadership.

Achievements and Improvements

The project has driven transformative improvements across education, infrastructure, and outreach:

  • Curriculum Enhancements:

    • The BBA-FAFT program, now HSUHK’s flagship, integrates AI, blockchain, and regtech, aligning with Chartered Financial Analyst standards. Courses emphasize no-code tools, ethical decision-making, and practical applications like digital payments and trade finance.

    • The FinTech minor attracts non-finance majors, broadening access to FinTech careers.

    • Certifications like AWS Cloud Practitioner and Google AI Essentials equip students with globally recognized, non-technical skills.

  • Infrastructure Upgrades:

    • State-of-the-art FinTech labs with high-end PCs and a supercomputer support hands-on learning, though current non-AI PCs limiting advanced AI applications.

  • Outreach and Engagement:

    • Competitions: Host different annual events—Inter-University FinTech Innovation Competition and Secondary School FinTech Innovation Competition. These engage large amount of students and youth yearly.

    • CUPP Success: In 2024 and 2025, we have teams reached Hong Kong’s top 20 in the Cyberport University Partnership Programme (CUPP), advancing to a Silicon Valley Bootcamp

    • Events: Annual FinTech Open Day and Hong Kong FinTech Week satellite education events promote FinTech literacy to students, industry, and the public.

  • Industry Collaboration:

    • Partnerships with leading FinTech firms (e.g., via the Industry Project Masters Network, IPMN) offer internships, real-world projects, and guest lectures, ensuring curriculum relevance.

    • One of the Year 1 BBA-FAFT Student won top 3 in the 2024 Inter-University Competition and top 20 in CUPP, showcasing global competitiveness.

    • One of the team member won the champion of a GENAI technology co-organized by Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) and CUHK Engineering FinTech Applied Research (CEFAR) Academy
